Why or when did Team Fortress 2 become so "Toxic"?

I do not understand from when did tf2, become so toxic.Im speaking about the community when did this community become so salty and toxic?
I played this game from 2012 (Yes i do not have proof, your not gaining anything by pointing it out), but at around 2017-2018 this game has become a salt and racist fest.
In many games stuff that people do/say would get them banned, i genuinely do not understand, can someone explain down here thanks.

It is not "dead", dead games do not have 46k players evry 24 hours. Dead games or unpopular games struggle to maintain 1k players per week. I spend quite a year or two playing tf2 i met my best friend on tf2 at around 2013 and were still friends to this day. This game gave me alot of good moments but community is trying to kill it i dont understand why?

Anyway, any popular game is bound to have diverse players which indicates there would be toxic ones. Take League of Legends for example which is one of the World's most popular games and its playerbase is by far worse.

The toxicity started after the Medic Update, and the introduction of "F2P" on TF2. But today the toxicity level is medium.
