While I agree that hats =/= skills, generally people with hats are going to be more experienced with TF2 than people with no hats (the exceptions being like smurfs or w/e), so I think that's what people are going after when they say hats = skills. However, I completely disagree that having no hats or a poor fashion sense makes you a bad player, that's just foolish.

Hats= rich people.
No hats= people that knows how and where to spend their money.

Hats+skills= YouTuber
No Hats+No Skills= Newbie/Hacker/Free2Play

No hats+skills= Second Account/people with limited funds
No skills+hats= Kids that stole their parents' credit card

So, Hats No skill
Experience in game-play is.

I think this is a bad derailment from the thread. While I find their leaving questionable as well, this could lead to conflict and we should just keep it to ourselves atm.

Okay so.. hats don't really matter at all except for the looks, HOWEVER hats usually means you have spend a decent amount of time on tf2 which means theres a higher chance that the player is a good player. Notice I am using the word "usually" because there are exceptions everywhere. No hats would imply that you haven't played a lot of tf2 because if you did you would get the free achievement hats or something, or the player is using an alt that he just created. Gibus/achievement hats would usually imply that the player has played an ok amount of tf2 and got kinda familiar with the game BUT there are also players who really don't care about cosmetics and can play for years without getting anything special, these players would probably be pretty good even if they have gibus.

Honestly, in my opinion hats don't matter, but they give a little indication to how good a player is. In the end though it is only their play that will accurately define how good they are so i'd say
hats =/= skill.

I believe that the thread's original question (hats = skills?) has been proven to be nothing more than a popular misconception. I have to admit that some of the posts here are really quite good, though. I can totally agree that in many of the scenarios you encounter in TF2, you can estimate roughly what skill level a player is around. But that only gets you so far, taking into account that a lot of great players, especially professionals, stick to minimal cosmetics and barely any flashy items or skins. However, I like DingdongJR's post a lot. Usually one would assume that because a player's got good items, they have the money to waste on them. Doesn't have to be any more than that. But I strongly believe in effort and dedication, so I feel this point of his is especially true. Acquiring items should be done if you have the intention to actually keep on playing and put in effort into the game.

I'll say that I usually play without any cosmetics. People usually find that threatening, and when you run into players you can beat it's nice to have them think twice about someone's skill level just because they look like a new player. A "free-to-play" may not play like a FtP at all.
